The Craft Behind This Saree
Chanderi is a small town in Madhya Pradesh that has been weaving extraordinary fabric for over seven centuries. What makes Chanderi unique is its characteristic combination of qualities that should not coexist — it is simultaneously sheer and structured, lightweight and lustrous, simple and entirely luxurious. The town sits at the intersection of old trade routes, and its weavers absorbed influences from the Mughals, the Marathas, and the Scindias across the centuries, each ruler leaving something behind in the weave. The silk-cotton blend — silk warp and cotton weft, or the reverse — is the heart of the Chanderi tradition, giving the fabric its distinctive drape and its quiet, natural sheen.
Care Instructions
- Wash: Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Silk-cotton is more forgiving than pure silk but still requires gentle handling.
- Do not: Do not machine wash, wring, or tumble dry.
- Dry: Dry in shade. Do not tumble dry. Lay flat or hang on a wide hanger to maintain shape.
- Iron: Medium heat on the reverse side. The silk content means heat above medium can damage the fabric. Always iron on the inside.
- First wash: Wash separately for the first wash — printed colours may bleed slightly. This is normal and will not affect subsequent washes.
- Store: Fold and store in a cool, dry place. Can be stored without special wrapping.
