Bengal handloom cotton is not cotton as most people know it. Mill-made cotton is woven by machines at speeds that impose uniformity: even thread count, even tension, even surface. Bengal handloom cotton is woven on a pit loom by a weaver whose hands set the tension of every throw of the shuttle. The resulting fabric has a slight irregularity that mill cotton does not — a texture that is alive in the way that handmade things are alive. It breathes differently, drapes differently, and softens differently with wear and washing: rather than pilling or thinning, it becomes softer and more itself over time.

The colour of Neel is the full spectrum of blue without reservation or qualification. Not dusty, not faded, not navy-dark or sky-pale — the saturated, complete blue that takes available light and holds it. Against the lime green border, the blue reads at its most accurate: the contrast between these two specific colours — one warm yellow-green, one cool deep blue — activates both in a way that neither achieves alone.

The border runs the full length of both edges of the saree and across the pallu, woven in lime green / chartreuse. At the pallu hem: a row of alternating mini tassels in blue and lime green, knotted at even intervals. The tassels move with the pallu when the saree is draped, marking the hem in motion. They are small and precise: this is not a tassel-heavy saree. The decoration is at the edge only, and the body is uninterrupted blue throughout.

Bengal handloom cotton is a warm-weather fabric first and foremost. The plain weave allows good air circulation, and the cotton absorbs light perspiration without clinging. The Craft Behind This Saree

Bengal has been weaving cotton for longer than most Indian textile traditions have existed. The weavers of Bengal — primarily of the Tanti and Basak communities — work on pit looms set into the floor of their homes, the weaver’s legs in the pit operating the treadles while their hands throw the shuttle. The pit loom is a simple machine: its complexity is entirely in the weaver’s knowledge of how to use it.

The contrast border on Neel is woven in as a structural part of the saree — the lime green threads are part of the warp setup, not added afterward. Changing the border colour on a handloom requires resetting the warp threads at the selvedge: the weaver makes this choice before the saree begins and commits to it. The tassels at the pallu hem are hand-knotted after weaving, each one tied individually at even intervals. They are among the finishing details that distinguish handloom from machine-made: too small and individual to be done mechanically.

• Wash: Hand wash in cold water. Bengal handloom cotton can be hand washed without damage. Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent.
• First wash: The royal blue may release a small amount of excess dye in the first one or two washes. Wash separately in cold water the first time.
• Machine wash: If machine washing, use the delicate cycle, cold water, laundry bag. Do not spin at high speed.
• Border: The lime green woven border is part of the fabric structure and will not bleed or separate in normal washing. The tassels are hand-knotted — avoid twisting or pulling them.
• Dry: In shade. Direct sun for extended periods will shift the blue slightly toward a warmer tone over time.
• Iron: Medium heat. Bengal handloom cotton responds well to ironing and recovers its drape fully after washing.
• Store: Folded in clean cotton or muslin. Avoid direct contact with synthetic fabric in storage.
